The NJVID Shibboleth Service Provider (SPs) are now www.njvid.net and beta.njvid.net. The pre-August 30th version of the website used the host fdr.njedge.net as the SP.

NJTrust participants who have subscribed to NJVID services will need to allow release of attributes to these SPs for using the NJVID service. Please contact support@njvid.net if you need any assistance.

Announcing two new features: Embed videos into your website and aSearch plugin for your browser

We are pleased to announce two new features  that were recently added to NJVID.

Embed- Embed publicly accessible videos(Commons or public videos you uploaded) into your website or blog

The users first need to be logged in and be a  NJVID subscriber to use this feature. You can then use this feature by going to  the page of any video and clicking the “embed” button. The tool will generate a HTML code which you can copy and paste into any website or blog.You can also embed publicly accessible videos into a Learning Management System using pre-existing URL plugins.The embed code can be generated for small and large players in standard and wide screen formats. These embedded videos can be viewed on mobile devices as well.

You can visit http://njedge.net/embedded-player/ to view a demo of how a video can be embedded in a WordPress website.

Videos that are protected will show a message indicating that the user will have to login through NJTrust to access the videos. If you are already logged into NJVID the video will show up in the embedded page.

NJVID Search plug-in for your browser (Firefox, IE, Chrome)

Ever felt the need to quickly search for videos and learning objects in NJVID through the browser search bar? You can now do this by adding our search plug-in to your browser (it works best on Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer) and then search for videos without having to visit the NJVID website. You can do conditional searches example: news and media, news or media, partial phrase search example:  journali*, and search term exclusion example: math -basic

Faster and efficient search using Apache Lucene/SOLR

The  new search platform is now available  based on Apache Lucene/SOLR . NJVID has transitioned from using Amberfish to the Lucene search platform. To see the new search feature click on http://www.njvid.net/s.php?query=journalism.

With this new platform NJVID can pull data from various data resources (XML, databases) and it offers a faster search retrieval and indexing mechanism. NJVID also has the ability to scale our search servers as per the service demand.

The following are some of the changes on the NJVID website:

  • Ability to search videos as well as learning objects provided by commercial video vendors and user created annotations (clips).

  • Search highlighting: The search term is highlighted in bold and larger text in the title, description and any other fields that the search term was found in, making search more accessible.

  • Users (public and logged in) can choose to see only the videos that they have access to. Users from Institutions that have subscribed to commercial videos and learning on demand users will see more results after they have logged in. (the search is performed taking into account their institution and the user id).

  • If you have subscribed to Learning on demand service, you have the option to not just list or unlist the video in search listings but also to choose to show in search listings for those users who have the rights to watch the video.

  • Narrow down your search based on publisher, subject, genre and other terms based on your initial search.

  • Have a  ‘NOT’ condition on your search – http://www.njvid.net/s.php?query=math+-basic

NJVID wins the NJLA CUS/ACRL-NJ Technology Innovation Award for 2011

The NJLA College and University Section (CUS) Technology Committee is pleased to announce that the NJLA CUS/ACRL-NJ Technology Innovation Award winners for 2011 are the NJVid Commercial Video Collection Team, a multi-institutional statewide effort led by:

  1. Sandra Miller, Co-Principal Investigator, NJVid IMLS Grant (William Paterson University)

  2. Grace Agnew, Co-Principal Investigator, NJVid IMLS Grant (Rutgers University.)

  3. Sujay Daniel, NJVid Manager, NJEDge Senior Information System Architect; and

  4. Jane Hutchison, Chair, VALE Digital Media Committee (William Paterson University).

The NJVid Commercial Video Collection Team will demonstrate their project at the Technology Innovation Forum on Tuesday, May 3rd, at the NJLA Conference in Long Branch, NJ. They will be joined by this year’s nominees for the Award, who will also demonstrate their individual projects:

  • Patricia Denholm, Dean of the Library, and Yolanda Sheppard, Technical Assistant, Sidney Silverman Library, Bergen Community College, for the “Sidney Mobile and QR Library Codes” project

  • Barbara Arnett, Web Services Librarian, and Valerie Forrestal, Reference and Research Services Librarian,  Stevens Institute of Technology, for  the “oneSearchBookMarklet” project; and

  • Denise O’Shea, Systems Librarian, Fairleigh Dickinson University, for the “FDU Library eReader and iPad Lending Program.”

The Technology Innovation Award will be presented at the College and University Section Luncheon on Wednesday, May 4th.
